Worthwhile piles

Happy New Year!

If your house is anything like my house, it's full of piles right now.

Piles of laundry, piles of decorations to be put away, piles of new things to find homes for, piles of things to return or exchanges. Piles, piles, piles. (This photo is just one cluster of such piles that are living in nearly every room of my house).

There are so many piles to deal with, I hardly know where to start.

So the first thing that I did was take down our Christmas tree and all of the associated decor. And then I organized the drawer full of my kids crayons and markers.

This approach is backwards if you ask my husband. He said, "Leave the tree, it's the last of our concerns. I just want our living room back."  I am pretty sure he wanted me to stop cleaning out the drawers and start putting stuff away.

But how can we get our living space back with all of this extra stuff lying around? How can I put stuff away when all of the drawers are a mess? I can't even think about how to properly organize our space when it's all cluttered.

So I took the tree down, and got to work cleaning out some drawers, and closets, and cupboards.  The entire dining room was a mess because the drawers in our art desk were jam packed full. Now that the drawers are clean I can get the surfaces under control.

Before I put the tree away I spent about 30 min cleaning out our basement storage closets and making yet another pile of stuff to donate to Good Will. It didn't get the job done quickly, but it helped to get it all done correctly.

Let the piles pile up for a few more days while you properly tend to the messes behind closed doors. If you just rush into cramming all of your new stuff in with your old, you will regret it in a few months. I promise.
