Yes, the top photo kind of tells the story and spoils the ending all in one- but I hope you'll stick around to see the progression anyway. I'm so excited to share this project that I couldn't help but show you the finished product right away.
Our round kitchen table is actually our dining room table because we've never lived anyplace with any sort of a formal eating area. And the table is probably older than I am. We bought it from an estate sale after the grandfather of one of my friends passed away about 10 years ago. At the time we had no furniture, so for $10 it has more than paid for itself over the years.
It's not exactly attractive...unless you like the Formica look. I don't really, so for years we've just covered it with a table cloth for special occasions and ignored it the rest of the time. For this project I gave it a good scrubbing, and then prepared to say goodbye to its faux wood surface.
To be honest, I had no idea exactly what I was going to do to this table when I went supply shopping. I just knew that I wanted to cover it with something. After a few hours in the craft store I came home with a few rolls of this stuff. I guess after my duct tape kids' table makeover, I knew that covering a table with tape isn't that hard to do.
I would say that this tape is similar to the washi tape that I keep reading about everywhere, but I think true washi tape has a rice paper base, which this probably does not. But it's thin, slightly transparent, and not super sticky. Since the table has a leaf (which we don't use), it was easiest to start in the middle of the table, using the line in the middle of the table as my guide for straightness. In my mind, I was going to make a herringbone pattern...but only because I have poor spatial reasoning did I think that this particular tape would make that pattern. In reality, it doesn't. Hmmmm.
So I experimented a bit with the tape, realized that I was going to need about 4 more rolls than I had bought, snapped an Instagram photo with the caption "I think I like it?" and went to bed.
The next day I went back to the craft store to get more tape and decided that if I had my heart set on herringbone, I should go for herringbone. I sort of liked what I had from last night, but I didn't LOVE it, and I wanted to LOVE my new table.
Originally I had shyed away from this tape pack because I didn't want too much more blue in my room- but I loved the yellow color and decided to goof around with it. 
After a few rows I was confident that mixing the yellow and the green was definitely the way to go. So I un-peeled all of the green/teal side and finished up with the yellow/green pattern. The great thing about this tape is that since it's not really THAT sticky, it's very easy to reposition and restick.
To make the table functional as an eating and working surface I sealed it with several coats of clear varnish after I was finished. I used the spray version, but will probably lightly sand it all and go back to paint on a final coat with a liquid version because the surface is still not completely smooth. But since I'm impatient, I wanted to show you the project now and figure out the final finishing portion later :)

I am obsessed with it! I decided to put a tiny stripe of teal on each end, just for a little bit of visual interest, and then I finished it all off with the dark blue tape around the edge. I love the way that it looks with our dishes.
My husband kind of teased me about the project because he said the finished product looked exactly like several of the table cloths we already own. (Which is true- we own a solid colored table cloth in most of these colors). But that was kind of the point. I like the look of a colorful table cloth- but I hate having something on our table that is impossible to write on, and is always needing to be thrown into the laundry.
The wide shot shows that not a whole lot changes as far as how the room looks, but up close I know it was totally worth the effort.
